Start as you mean to go on. A day that begins with a sustaining breakfast has a better chance of being a good one (or at least a slimmer chance of encouraging you to get intimate with a tin of chocolate biscuits at 10.42am). Most mornings for me begin with either a cinnamon coffee protein shake, a small smoked paprika chia frittata (if I’ve made a batch earlier in the week) or bircher muesli or porridge made from chia or quinoa.

By the time the weekends roll around we’ve now clocked that breakfast and brunch are a great occasion to entertain, particularly if there are wee ones involved. That’s when a generous portion of Smokey Baked Beans or a tray of Mexican Baked Eggs come to the fore. They’re a relatively easy, prepare-ahead way to put food on the table for a group – with the added benefit of nobody needing to be on toast duty. The only thing left to organise is who’s making the coffee.
