This is hardly a recipe at all – just a combination of delicious things to share! I love food that you have to work a little harder at to eat – it creates a sense of congeniality and community – shared food in the middle of the table is my preferred way of eating. A good fishmonger will be happy to provide you with beautiful, freshly cooked crab claws.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
12-16 freshly cooked crab claws
1 quantity see method for ingredients, Chilli Oil
1 quantity see method for ingredients
1-2 lemons, cut into wedges
little bowls sea salt
basket chewy peasant-style bread
small bowl radishes, (optional)

Method

  1. Crack the crab claws gently with the back of a heavy knife, without crushing the meat. Pile them on to a platter. Place on the middle of the table, along with all the other ingredients. Provide finger bowls for everyone, too. Bon appétit!

Note

  • Beautiful bread is an important part of any meal, though it has its place. Offering a large basket at the beginning of a meal encourages people to fill up too early, lessening their enjoyment of the food to follow, so bear this in mind. Choose breads with character – open textured with a chewy crust. I particularly like sourdoughs and ryes – breads that hold their own and add their particular dimension to a meal.
