I’ll never forget standing at the most impressive breakfast buffet I have ever seen in Rome and seeing the Italian businessmen pass on the salmon and jamon Iberico and opt for the Nutella on white bread instead. Given Italy’s relationship with food it was quite a statement. Like most internationally known processed foods, however, this spread is actually full of naughties, but it’s so easy to make your own I suggest you give it a try.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
180g hazelnut butter
90ml coconut oil
1 tablespoon cacao powder
4 tablespoons runny honey

To serve

Quantity Ingredient
sourdough toast
figs
chia or hemp seeds
mint or lemon balm leaves

Method

  1. Put the hazelnut butter in a food processor and blend for 1 minute to incorporate the oil. Add the remaining ingredients and blend for another 1 minute until smooth.
  2. Transfer the ‘nutella’ to a jar and store in the refrigerator until needed, bringing it to room temperature 5–10 minutes before using. When ready to serve, spread the ‘nutella’ over a slice of toasted sourdough, top with slices of fresh fig and sprinkle over some chia or hemp seeds and herbs.
