These were something my mum used to make when I was little. You can serve them the Italian way in a tomato sauce with spaghetti, or you can serve them with mashed potatoes and salad – or even with mushy peas.


Quantity Ingredient
1 small onion, roughly chopped
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 pinches black pepper
1 sprig parsley
1 1/2 cups grated parmesan cheese
1 cup homemade breadcrumbs
500g minced chicken or beef
1 small lemon, juiced
4 tablespoons olive oil, for frying

  1. If you’re having a BBQ, this meatball mix also makes excellent burgers! Just take ¼ cup scoops of the mixture and shape them into round flat patties instead of meatballs.
  2. Ask a grown-up to help you put the onion into a food processor and blitz it to a paste. Once the grown-up has removed the blade from the processor, scrape the paste into a mixing bowl.
  3. Add the salt and pepper then use the scissors to snip the parsley leaves into the bowl. Add the grated parmesan, breadcrumbs and the minced chicken (or beef) to the bowl. Make sure your hands are very clean then use them to scrunch all the ingredients together with your fingers until they are evenly mixed. Add the lemon juice and use your hands to mix it in well.
  4. Measure out 1 level tablespoon of the meatball mixture and use damp hands to roll it into a neat ball. Place it on a baking tray and continue until you have used up all the mixture.
  5. Measure half the oil into a frying pan and ask a grown-up to help you heat it over a medium heat. Carefully place some of the meatballs in the pan and fry for about 8 minutes until they are brown all over and cooked through. Ask a grown-up to help you with this and stand well back in case the oil spatters.
  6. Use the tongs to lift the cooked meatballs out of the pan and onto paper towel to drain. It’s a good idea to wear oven mitts while you do this in case the oil splatters.
  7. Repeat until all the meatballs are cooked.
  8. Arrange the meatballs on a platter and serve them straight away.
