A myriad of sweet treats exist in Mexico, often created for religious and patriotic celebrations. Marvelling at the ancient grandeur of the dulcerias in Mexico City, it reminded me of Paris with its pâtisseries.

There’s less pastry but no less effort in drawing flavour from sour fruit, caramel, chocolate, exotic spices, nuts and goat’s and coconut milk. Chocolate is treated with respect, bespokely ground and flavoured to your taste. Tequila and chocolate dance on your palate while cazuelas and capirotada remind us who first discovered the pleasures of sugar and spice. Dulce de leche reigns supreme until you try cajeta, a goat’s milk version that will silence any rowdy table! These sweet treats will hopefully lure you back into the kitchen.
