Wrap your hands around this fragrant warm mulled wine and drink to your health – this wine holds undisputed tonic properties for the heart and breathing. Add a cinnamon quill as well if you like and enjoy on a cooler Christmas evening.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
1 orange
1/2 small lemon
750ml dry red wine
1/2 cup sugar
5 black peppercorns
6 cloves
3 star anise
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

Method

  1. Peel the rind from the orange and lemon without taking any of the white pith (which makes it bitter). Squeeze the juice from the fruit and set aside. Put the wine in a saucepan with the orange and lemon rinds, sugar, peppercorns, cloves, star anise and nutmeg, and bring slowly to a simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved. Add the reserved fruit juice and simmer a further 5 minutes. Pour into heatproof glasses or mugs and serve hot.
