These little morsels pierced with a clove and coated with icing sugar are sometimes known as Greek shortbreads.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
250g butter, softened
80g caster sugar
1 egg yolk
450g plain flour, sifted
80g almonds, finely chopped
cloves
icing sugar, sifted

Method

  1. Cream butter with sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg yolk and beat well. Stir in flour alternately with almonds.
  2. Knead mixture lightly and form into a ball. Roll small pieces of dough into balls the size of hazelnuts, and press a clove into centre of each.
  3. Place on greased baking trays and bake in a preheated slow oven 150°C for 25–30 minutes. While still warm, toss biscuits in icing sugar and place on wire racks to cool. Serve in tiny paper patty cases, if you wish.
