Athens is both modern and ancient: a bustling city full of monuments. It oozes history and culture. As a first timer, Blair was excited to be there and keen to climb the Acropolis, perched high above the city, the first democratic centre of the ancient world. But first I had to take him to the Agora meat market for a taste of their famous tripe soup. Despite Blair having been brought up to try everything, this was not a hit, so we headed off to the long-established Stani Patisserie where a plate of their stunning Greek yoghurt with honey and walnuts and an icy frappé set us up for our whirlwind day in Athens.

Not only did we visit the Acropolis museum, but we got to see inside an apartment, visiting a friend, George, who is the son of a very well-known artist, Nikos Kypraios. Here we sipped on sweet Samos wine before visiting Brettos distillery, one of the oldest bars in the city and famous for serving 642 different drinks. Blair’s mania for cocktails sent him into the night in a quest for new and interesting Greek cocktails, while I learned a modern spin on Greek food, cooking at Kuzina Restaurant with owner and chef, Aris Tsanaklidis.

Despite the late night, the next day we were on our way, and the first stop was the Corinth Canal that connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf. We caught a boat along the six kilometre length of the canal and looked up at the drop of 79 metres. I was none too pleased when I learned that Blair had arranged a bungy jump, but conveniently not mentioned it to me!
