The people of Puglia are not known as purveyors of indulgent sweet treats as they generally prefer savoury foods. Sweets in Puglia have often always been reserved for festivals and religious holidays. However, we have selected a few examples of Pugliese-inspired desserts. The conclusion of a meal in Puglia is often punctuated with biscotti (cookies), fresh fruit, nuts and the accompaniment of homemade liqueurs. Almonds, figs, hazelnuts, pistachio nuts and spices are a reminder of the Middle Eastern influences in Puglia, and feature regularly in Pugliese sweets.
Limoncello di Michele (Michele‘s limoncello) and Padre Peppe (Walnut liqueur) in this chapter, are prime examples of using fresh walnuts and lemons as a digestive at the end of a meal. During our travels down south, Vivienne and I many times would have a summer siesta then wake up to some Biscotti al pistacchio (Pistachio cookies) made by my zia (my aunt), a freshly brewed espresso and a glass of limoncello or Padre Peppe. What a great way to sweeten your day.
