Calamari is a great, sustainable seafood. Lightly pan-fried it makes a healthy snack or it can be served with a salad for a more wholesome lunch. If your child isn’t keen on other meats, this might be one protein source she’ll happily accept.

Tartare sauce is traditionally made with a mayonnaise base, but yoghurt makes a lovely healthy alternative.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
35g plain flour
400g calamari, cleaned and cut into 1 cm strips
2 tablespoons light olive oil
or 2 tablespoons rice bran oil
lemon wedges, to serve

Tartare sauce

Quantity Ingredient
125g greek-style yoghurt
3 teaspoons cornichons, finely chopped
2 teaspoons capers, rinsed and chopped
1 teaspoon dill, finely chopped
1 teaspoon white balsamic vinegar

Method

  1. To make the tartare sauce, stir together all of the ingredients until well combined. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  2. To make the calamari, place the flour on a large plate. Add the calamari and toss until coated all over, shaking off any excess flour.
  3. Heat half of the oil in a large frying pan over high heat. Add half of the calamari and cook for 2 minutes, or until golden brown and just cooked. Drain on paper towel. Repeat with the remaining oil and calamari until all cooked.
  4. Serve the calamari with tartare sauce and lemon wedges on the side.

Tip

  • Cooked properly, calamari should be lovely and tender. Make sure your child is confidently chewing before serving it and never leave her unattended while she’s eating.

Baby’s serve

  • For a younger baby, wait until your baby is confidently managing some finger foods (which may not happen until 8–9 months or older) before offering her this calamari. Once she’s ready, simply serve as is, cut into small pieces if she prefers. For an older baby, serve as is.

Toddler’s serve

  • Serve as is.
