Poached pears with whole-egg custard

These poached pears are also lovely served with yoghurt – in many ways it allows you to enjoy the delicious cinnamon syrup more. But for most children, the simplicity of the chopped pear with custard is a firm favourite.

Poached pears


Quantity Ingredient
250ml fresh orange juice
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1 cinnamon stick
6 small packham pears, peeled

Whole-egg custard

Quantity Ingredient
3 eggs
1 1/2 tablespoons maple syrup
1 tablespoon cornflour
500ml milk
1/2 teaspoon natural vanilla extract


  1. To make the poached pears, place the orange juice, maple syrup and cinnamon stick in a saucepan. Add the pears and 190 ml water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 45 minutes, turning occasionally, until the pears are tender. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the pears to a heatproof bowl.
  2. Increase the heat to high and bring the pear cooking liquid to the boil. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20 minutes or until the liquid becomes syrupy. Pour over the pears and set aside for 10 minutes to cool slightly.
  3. Meanwhile, make the custard. Place the eggs, maple syrup and cornflour in a mixing bowl. Use a hand-held whisk to combine. Heat the milk and vanilla in a small saucepan until it is just starting to simmer. Slowly pour into the bowl with the egg mixture, whisking continuously until combined. Return to the saucepan and cook, stirring, over low heat for about 5 minutes, or until the mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon. Remove from the heat. Strain to remove any lumps.
  4. Serve the poached pears and syrup with the warm custard or yoghurt, if liked.

Baby’s serve

  • Because this dish does have some added sugar, you should ideally wait until your baby is over 12 months before offering it to her. If you do wish to give her a little taste, you can blend together some of the pear and custard until smooth, or cut up the pear into small pieces.

Toddler’s serve

  • Cut up the pear into small pieces and serve with the custard.
