I’m a firm believer in balance and moderation. So although my focus is healthy eating, I don’t believe that means skipping dessert. I have so many fond childhood memories of baking scones with my dad and cakes with my grandma, I couldn’t bear it if my own children missed out on the joy of pulling a freshly baked sweet treat from the oven.

The trick is to make your desserts and baking as nutritious as possible, which is what the recipes in this chapter are all about. By cutting back on sugar and adding fruit (and even vegetables) where possible, there’s no reason your baking should cause you any guilt.

If you’re looking to bring your children into the kitchen to teach them some cooking basics, the recipes in this chapter might be the best place to start. There’s something about making cupcakes or biscuits that seems to captivate every age.
