I also love Grandma’s grilled sandwiches with cheese. They’re delicious with ham – Harry agrees. Grandma lets me eat them sitting up on her bench and she tells me they’re called ‘croque monsieur’ in French.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
butter
4 slices wholemeal bread
4 slices free-range leg ham
4 slices gruyere or emmental cheese

Method

  1. Preheat a sandwich press. Spread some butter on each slice of bread (the buttered side goes on the outside of the sandwich). Divide the ham between two slices of bread, then top with the cheese and another slice of bread. Cook in the sandwich press for 2–3 minutes, or until they are golden brown and the cheese has melted. If you don’t have a sandwich press, you can cook the sandwiches in a frying pan over medium heat with a knob of butter. Cut into triangles or halves to serve.

Note

  • The French usually make croque monsieur with white bread, but we like to use wholemeal, which is healthier and just as delicious!
