Bloodletting

We all like to channel the dark side on occasion. Noir can be the ideal hideaway when life feels extreme. Swimming in its depths brings everyone from Swans, The Birthday Party, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Ministry to the poolside of our emotional destruction, and it is the ‘upper’ we need when things seem bleak.

But there is hope in Noir’s pessimism, despite its morbid evanescence. Sometimes it’s the post-industrial sounds that soothe the soul, while for others, it’s Noir’s eternal nihilism that somehow helps tweak a smile.

Swans capture Noir through hypnotic beats and dark ambient sounds while The Birthday Party revel in a blood-letting atypical of the avant-Noir scene. Elsewhere, there’s Einsturzende Neubaten’s distinctive drilling massacre of sounds, Nick Cave’s bloodthirsty poetry, Lydia Lunch’s self-professing anger, Nine Inch Nails’ razor-sharp industrialism and Mark Lanegan and The Gutter Twins’ self-loathing and redemption – all of which footnote Noir and hide behind her morbid veil.

These dark horses and heiresses trot through the fields of despair and show us the bleakness of life’s woes. Noir is moody. It’s dark, gothic, fragile, cinematic and intense – and nothing is quite as narcotic as the music it spawns.
