There is a kind of magic that happens when treacle and butter are combined with a sprinkle of salt. All the flavours of a salty, muscovado caramel come together within seconds into a bread-spreadable form. Try it on some toasted brioche with jam, spread on pancakes, or fry some toasty croûtons in it to add an unexpected highlight of sweetness to autumnal salads.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
110g unsalted butter, softened
1/2 teaspoon flaky salt
2 teaspoons black treacle
or 2 teaspoons unsulfured molasses

Method

  1. Cream the butter together with the treacle until it has an even gold colour and a light texture. Stir in the flaky salt and chill until needed.
