Sides are akin to bonus points for a meal. You’ve got a lasagne (score!) but also, hey, look, a side of some kind of garlicky courgettes! You’ve got soup, but woah: check out this focaccia, man. They’re the equivalent of pic-n-mix for the savoury world: pair a couple of sides together, then add a fried egg or some grilled meat and you’ve got yourself a simple, satisfying meal. Alternatively you can take them down the starter or dinner-party-snack route because they are awesome for sharing. If you’re me, there’s also the hidden agenda of eating most of them yourself in lieu of an actual meal. They are essentially everything I could want for sustenance: warm and filling, often spiked with garlic, jalapeño or cheese. It’s the kind of food that I will want to eat no matter what, especially if there is evening light, the company of great friends, plus a pack of playing cards (the only situation in which I’ll actually play card games) or alone with a good magazine.
