What I want and what my children want are very different things. I dream of a sun lounger, the chance to read a book cover to cover and an icy G&T served pool side with a nosebag chaser of salted nibbles. Conversely, my children dream of trains, trampolines and treasure to hunt.

When it comes to their birthdays I make a point of trying to remember back to what it was like to be a child. To worry about who sat next to you when the jelly was served, whether the music would stop when the parcel was passed across your lap and whether Mummy had remembered to put a balloon and bubbles in the party bags. Important and troubling stuff when you’re five.

These ideas have all been well received by my sons and their friends but don’t go mad and make them all. I’d choose two sweet, two savoury and something to house the candles for the Happy Birthday sing-along. If you can, add to that lots of mums and dads to hoover up the leftovers as kids always eat less at parties than we grown-ups think. They’re too busy being statues, pinning tails or passing parcels. We could learn a thing or two from them.
