Sometimes the fields seem to move like the surface of warm water. The last dry breeze of summer. Distant stacks smoke, barley and rye. Everything is biscuit and dust. We run the tyre track mazes before the cut. The harvest is sweet with the humming thrash and turn of the machines at dusk. Windows, we begin to stand this side of you and look at each other again. Walks, the air holds us in its blue, then lets us go in ochre. Everything turns. The plough turns, the soil is thick and dark as night. The wheat flour in my hands is white.
