This sandwich, whether a double or triple decker, holds its origins in the USA. Now every hotel around the world has their own classic version. Time to make your classic right here.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
1 egg
2 slices smoked streaky bacon
3 thin slices brown or white bread
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
small handful iceberg lettuce
4 thin slices cucumber
small handful cooked chicken pieces
few slices red onion
1/2 teaspoon dijon mustard
large slice mature cheddar
4 thin slices ripe tomato
sea salt
freshly ground black pepper

Method

  1. Cook the egg in a small saucepan of boiling water for 7 minutes. Remove from the saucepan and place it into a bowl of cold water to cool. When cool, peel off the shell and slice.
  2. Meanwhile, cook the bacon either in a frying pan or under the grill until crispy. Lightly toast the bread on both sides under the grill or in a toaster. Set aside.
  3. Spread half the mayonnaise on one slice of the toast. Top with the lettuce, cucumber, chicken and onion. Place another slice of toast over the onion and spread it with the mustard, followed by the cheese, bacon, tomato and egg. Spread the final slice of toast with the remaining mayonnaise, close the sandwich (mayonnaise side down). To hold it together, stick a toothpick through it.
