A trick to get children to eat more vegetables is to add them to smoothies. Blending vegetables with sweeter flavours disguises their taste and makes them more appealing. Frozen vegetables are the best option as they are milder in taste and often actually contain more nutrients than fresh vegetables (because they are frozen directly after being picked). Other plus sides are that they are generally cheaper, available all year round and obviously have a much longer shelf life. This green smoothie contains both broccoli and peas, yet has a sweet and fruity flavour due to the banana and a kick of freshness from the orange juice and ginger. We created this recipe to be child-friendly, but it is just as good for any adults who want to incorporate more vegetables into their lives.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
1 ripe banana, peeled
50g frozen broccoli florets
50g frozen peas
1 tablespoon linseeds
1/2 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
or 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
250ml freshly squeezed orange juice

Method

  1. Roughly chop the banana and add it to a blender along with the rest of the ingredients.
  2. Blend on a high speed until completely smooth.
  3. Pour into two medium-sized glass bottles or four small ones and serve with straws.
