My Abuelo was born and raised in the seaside town of Alvarado in the state of Veracruz on the southeast coast of Mexico. His parents, Roberto and Luisa, owned and ran a small but successful seafood restaurant, which was hugely popular among locals and visitors alike.

When he was young, Abuelo helped out in the restaurant. Each day he would jump on a piragua, a traditional handmade fishing boat, and row to his favourite spots. He loved fishing and would call seafood regalos del mar (‘gifts of the sea‘). He would also check the handmade nets for the catch of the day, which often consisted of shiny blue crabs as large as melons, ghost-like transparent prawns (shrimp), and sometimes lobsters. Abuelo would supply his parents‘ tiny restaurant with the freshest seafood, which would also become dinner for his brother and sisters.

The following recipes are very old family recipes, many of which were cooked in Abuelo‘s parents‘ restaurant.
