The temperance movement had some lovely ideas. For example, one writer suggested that drunks could die from ‘internal fires kindled often spontaneously from the fumes of alcohol’.

Another writer rather dramatically suggested that the best punishment for people caught drinking was to hang them from an aeroplane by the tongue.

The story of the sidecar itself is simple. It was either invented in Paris or in London. It may or may not have been named for an American army captain who would arrive at one of many bars via a motorcycle sidecar. What is certain, however, is that it is delicious.
