During 1923 a prohibition agent, delightfully named Izzy Einstein, timed how long it took him to buy illegal hooch from the time he got off the train in several major cities. The winner hands down was New Orleans at 35 seconds.

With a major seaport providing almost unlimited access to the vast booze caches of the Caribbean and Mexico, New Orleans never paid much attention to prohibition. They didn’t have blind pigs and speakeasies, just restaurants and bars.

The ramos gin fizz, along with the sazerac and the absinthe frappé were the most famous New Orleans drinks of the day.

A collection of drinks with milk and cream.
