Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
8 mint leaves
2 teaspoons Sugar syrup
60ml rye whiskey, (or bourbon)
2 drops angostura bitters
a mint sprig with a big piece of stalk still attached and a thin slice of orange, to garnish

Method

  1. Put the first two ingredients into a mixing glass. Using the handle end of a wooden spoon, swirl the leaves around the glass (this will bruise them enough to extract the flavour but not so much as to make them taste like lawn clippings). Fill the serving glass to just over the top with crushed ice and tip this into the mixing glass along with the whiskey and bitters. Stir gently until the glass is frosty. Pour unstrained into the serving glass and stir gently until it is very frosty. Stick the mint stalk way down into the drink and float the orange slice on top.

Note

  • Tastes strong, sweet and a little aromatic.

Note

  • This is best served in a julep cup or highball glass.
