Salads are the elixir we feel will solve all our weight issues, but they can be tough on digestive systems and we are not all able to extract the nutrients. Salads often have the same qualities as vata (light, cold, rough) so will increase this dosha, but as vata may find them hard to digest, eat them at lunchtime when agni is strongest and in summer to balance heat. Dress well as the oil will counter the rough, light qualities, and try warm, cooked salads. Kapha may also find salads hard to digest and their cold, damp quality will add to your cool constitution, but as they are also light and rough, they help balance kapha’s heavy, oily qualities. Again, eat only for a summer lunch – warm salads with spices are ideal. Pitta often love salads as you crave cooling foods and your agni should be strong enough to digest them. Dress your salads with lemon juice.
